Offline Updates: Manage Customer Benefits Without Scanning Their Card

Lynch M.     Sep 20, 2026

Normally, when you want to update a customer's loyalty card, you scan the QR code on their card first.

Offline Updates provide a more flexible way to add benefits to a customer's card. When Offline Updates are allowed, merchant staff can find the customer directly in the VeeCard App and add benefits without asking the customer to show their phone or loyalty card.

This is useful when a customer forgets their phone, does not have their phone with them, or prefers to let merchant staff manage their loyalty benefits.

Two Types of Benefit Operations

VeeCard card operations can be divided into two types:

Add Benefits

These operations give additional benefits to the customer, such as:

  • Add stamps
  • Add points
  • Add rewards
  • Add prepaid balance
  • Add prepaid services

When Offline Updates are allowed, these operations can be performed without scanning the customer's loyalty card.

Use Benefits

These operations use benefits that the customer already has, such as:

  • Use stamps
  • Use points or balance
  • Use prepaid services
  • Redeem rewards

These operations normally require the customer to be present and their loyalty card to be scanned.

How Offline Updates Work

When Offline Updates are allowed for a customer's card, merchant staff can find the customer directly from:

VeeCard App → Home → Search Customer

Select the customer to access their card and add benefits without scanning their loyalty card.

For example, if a regular customer forgets their phone, staff can find the customer through Search Customer and add today's stamp without asking the customer to open their loyalty card.

How Customers Change the Offline Updates Permission

Customers can control whether merchant staff can update their card without scanning it.

The permission is called Allow offline updates.

To change this permission:

Step 1 — Show the Card QR Code

By merchant staff, to your customers

On the VeeCard App Home page, show the QR code for the published card design.

Step 2 — Scan the QR Code

By the customer

The customer scans the QR code with their phone.

  • The first scan allows the customer to get a new card.
  • Later scans retrieve their existing card.

The customer's card opens in a web browser.

Step 3 — Open Permissions

On the web-based card, the customer taps the button in the top-right corner and selects Permissions.

Step 4 — Change the Permission

The customer can turn Allow offline updates on or off.

When it is on, merchant staff can add benefits through Search Customer without scanning the customer's card.

When it is off, merchant staff can still find and view the customer's card through Search Customer, but cannot modify it there. The customer needs to show their loyalty card so staff can scan it.

Default Offline Updates Settings

The default setting depends on the card design.

Card Design Allow offline updates
Loyalty Card On by default
Tiered Loyalty Card On by default
Membership Card On by default
Prepaid Package Card Off by default
Prepaid Balance Card Off by default

Offline Updates are enabled by default for Loyalty Cards, Tiered Loyalty Cards, and Membership Cards.

They are disabled by default for Prepaid Package Cards and Prepaid Balance Cards.

Customers can change the setting from their card's Permissions at any time.

Offline Loyalty Cards

Offline Loyalty Cards are a separate VeeCard feature for customers who:

  • Do not have a smartphone
  • Forgot their phone during registration
  • Need help managing their digital loyalty card

With an Offline Loyalty Card, the merchant creates and manages the card directly.

For more information, see Issuing Cards to Your Customers → 7. Offline Loyalty Cards.

When a customer claims an Offline Loyalty Card

When a customer scans and claims their Offline Loyalty Card, it becomes a normal digital loyalty card.

The customer's existing card information and benefits remain with the card.

After the card is claimed, the Allow offline updates permission is reset to the default setting of the card design.

For example, if the Offline Loyalty Card uses a Loyalty Card design, Offline Updates will be enabled after the customer claims the card because Loyalty Cards have Offline Updates enabled by default.

The customer can then change the permission from ⋯ → Permissions → Allow offline updates.

FAQ

Why can't I modify a customer's card from Search Customer?

The customer's Allow offline updates permission may be turned off.

You can still find and view the customer's card, but you cannot modify it through Search Customer.

Ask the customer to open their card and enable:

⋯ → Permissions → Allow offline updates

Alternatively, ask the customer to show their loyalty card so you can scan it.

Can I use or redeem a customer's benefits from Search Customer?

Normally, no.

Use Benefits operations normally require the customer to be present and their loyalty card to be scanned.

This includes using stamps, prepaid balance, prepaid services, or redeeming rewards.

Why are Offline Updates disabled by default for prepaid cards?

Prepaid cards can represent monetary value or prepaid services.

For this reason, Prepaid Package Cards and Prepaid Balance Cards have Offline Updates disabled by default.

Customers can enable Allow offline updates from their card's Permissions if they want to allow merchant staff to add benefits without scanning their card.

What is the difference between an Offline Loyalty Card and Offline Updates?

They are two different features.

Offline Loyalty Card is a special card created and managed by the merchant for customers who cannot or do not want to use a smartphone.

Offline Updates is a permission that allows merchant staff to add benefits to a customer's normal digital loyalty card without scanning the customer's card.

When an Offline Loyalty Card is claimed by the customer, it becomes a normal digital loyalty card, and its Allow offline updates permission is reset to the default setting for that card design.
